The town of Greenwich is another affluent town in Fairfield County and borders Long Island Sound as well as Westchester County in New York State. To give you an idea of size, Greenwich is approximately twice the size of Manhattan. The founder and Governor of Massachusetts’ Bay Colony had a daughter named Elizabeth Fones Winthrop who was one of the founders of Greenwich. It is named after Greenwich, England, and pronounced the same way (gren-itch) . In early town history, Greenwich Point was known as “Elizabeth’s neck” as she had purchased much of the area known now as Old Greenwich as well as the Point.
There are a few areas within the town to note: Riverside, Old Greenwich, and Cos Cob– which each have their own train station through Metro-North, besides the main Greenwich line. The Griffith E. Harris golf course was named after the First Selectman from 1952-1958, affectionately known as, “Griff”. There are also eight country clubs with their own golf courses, eleven tennis courts, the Dorothy Hamill Ice Skating Rink ,and a community sailing center . The Eastern Greenwich Civic Center is also a hub of activity. Lots of amenities for a town with nearly 60,000 residents, but Greenwich also is a nature lover’s paradise. The town boasts many parks, nature preserves and bird sanctuaries, besides offering four beaches, on Long Island sound and a few islands to boot! There are four marinas here, too.
Greenwich Hospital is a widely respected Community health care facility that also has cancer/oncology department. Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway are the main arteries serving Greenwich, however Interstate 684 passes through Greenwich, although there is no entrance or exit ramp into Greenwich itself.
TRIVIA: American Lane in Greenwich is separated by Interstate 684 from the rest of the state and can only be reached from the State of New York!
The Manhattan skyline is visible from the top of Round Hill, which has an elevation of more than 550 feet.
